‘FOE’ ending revealed: Paul Meskal and Saoirse Ronan’s sci-fi movie ends with a double plot twist

2023 movie FOENow streaming on Prime Video, starring two of Ireland’s best young actors, Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescall.

Adapted from the novel by award-winning author Ian Read (I’m thinking of ending things), who directed director Garth Davis (the lion), the story takes place in the near future, when Earth is dying and humans are planning to colonize space. But that’s not really what this film is about. Despite strong performances from the cast, the script moves through an amorphous narrative, culminating in a plot twist that you probably saw coming. still, FOE Confusing at times, too.

Don’t worry, because Decider is here to help. Read on for a complete breakdown of FOE Movie plot summary and FOE Explained the end of the film.

FOE Movie Plot Summary:

The year is 2065, and Earth is dying. Prolonged drought has left the land parched, and food and water are dwindling. Despite all this, married couple Han (Ronan) and Junior (Mescal) have carved out a simple existence in an old farmhouse in the remote Midwest. Their marriage is in trouble – when we first meet Hen, she’s crying in the shower. In a voiceover, Hahn says, presumably about her husband, “He doesn’t really see me anymore. It seems he has replaced me with someone else.”

That night, Junior awoke to headlights shining in his face. A car that pulls into their driveway brings a visitor, Terence (Aaron Pierre). Terence works for Outermore, the government’s space settlement program, and is here to tell Junior that he has been shortlisted as a candidate for an outer space settlement. It quickly becomes clear that this is not optional; Jr. has been drafted. If chosen, it will not go forever, but it will remain in the settlement for many years. Terence says the selection process will also take a year or more, and the hen and junior are expected to lead normal lives until then.

Hen is pulling away from Junior. One day, Junior tells Hen not to wear a certain shirt anymore—because, he says, she wore it the day they met, and he doesn’t want it to get worn out. Chicken asks what else Junior remembers about the day they met, and Junior says they were happy. After this conversation, Hen sleeps with Junior again and their relationship begins to improve.

A year later, Terence returned. Junior is officially ready to go into space. Terence drops another bombshell: while Junior is gone, he will be replaced by an AI robot that looks just like him to live with his wife. To build this robot, Terence will stay with Han and Junior for a few weeks, interviewing and observing Junior. This will ensure that the robot is accurate.

Hen is oddly blasé about leaving Junior, and starts cleaning the house. She finds a beetle, which attracts Junior. He addresses Bumblebee as “little guy” and wonders why he isn’t moving. Walking alone, Junior sees the men getting burned and runs to the fire. He is knocked to the ground, and disfigures his shoulder. When he arrives, his shoulder has been treated by a doctor, according to Terence. Junior starts talking about running away with the chicken.

Junior overhears Han talking to Terence. She says she’s always dreamed of a life other than this marriage, and fantasizes about running away, leaving Junior with nothing but a blank note.

what’s that FOE Movie plot twist?

You probably saw this coming: the Junior we know throughout the film isn’t human. He Robot copy. The real Junior returns from his space mission, and confronts his robot. Terence explains to the robot that “the only way to test your full capability and function was to experience the opposite face-to-face.” Okay, sure. Terence explains that the robot was brought there a year ago, and that Terence’s headlights woke him up the night it activated.

The robot is visibly upset, and screams for the chicken. He insists that his life is real. Hen is also upset, and screams at Terence and the others in the room – the people observing the experiment – that they are demons going to hell. Robot and Chicken “I love you.” Hen begs Terence not to stop the robot, but she is dragged away. As he’s powering up the robot, Terence says he never thought Han would fall in love with an AI. With his last words, the robot cries and promises the chicken, “We’ll go somewhere else.”

FOE The ending of the film explained:

Manav Jr. is upset with the chicken for “cheating” on him with the robot. Hen insists that it wasn’t a hoax, and she falls in love with Junior again through the robot. But this is not the same as Human Junior. They are cold and distant. He is not interested in running away or going anywhere with the hen. But then, a miracle: it begins to rain, ending the long drought.

The chicken happily starts dancing in the rain, and tries to get Junior to join him. But he refuses. He snaps at her. Chicken realizes at this moment that she will not get the version of Junior back with the robot. The next morning, Junior takes a blank note from the chicken. Clearly, she has run away, just as she told Terence she would.

Terence visits the farmhouse after Han leaves, but it is unclear what he is there to do. Later that night, Junior waits in vain for his wife to come home… and, by some miracle, she does. The chicken promises that it is here to stay.

But is it really a chicken? No! Just as Robot Junior was distracted by the bug, this version of the chicken has the exact same reaction to the beetle in the sink. What does that mean? This chicken is a robot! The final shot of the film shows us that the real, human Chicken is on the plane, while the robot that replaces him stays with Junior. Terence may have dropped off a new robot hen when he visited their home. Now Chicken Man gets to live out his dreams of exploration, while Junior Man lives out his dreams of standing still… with a robot. Everyone lives happily ever after. Sort.
