Prepare for more of those clicker sounds bouncing around your brain. After setting HBO viewership records during its premiere in early 2023, the zombie apocalypse thriller The Last of Us Moving on for a second season, Bella will bring back Ramsay and Pedro Pascal as the emotionally traumatized pseudo-father-daughter duo Eli and Joel. And now that the series has multiple Emmy nominations under its belt, expect an even splashier Season 2.
The HBO adaptation was the media giant’s second-biggest debut, trailing only behind Game of Thrones The prequel House of the Dragon in viewership, and experienced a 22 percent audience jump from its first episode to its second episode. (That’s the biggest increase for an HBO original drama in History.) Suffice it to say that people are and will remain invested in the PlayStation adaptation of the series, which has sold millions of copies across the two games themselves.
Upon HBO’s greenlighting of season 2, executive producer and show co-creator Craig Mazin released the following statement: “I’m so grateful to (co-creator and original game developer) Neil Druckman and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more so. Thank you to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the opportunity to continue, and as a fan of the characters and the world created by Neal and Naughty Dog, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”
Throughout its nine episodes, Season 1 remained largely faithful to the 2013 game, essentially recreating some scenes image for image. But Season 2 is more of an enigma, given the source material it’s based on: The Last of Us Part IIThe sequel was set several years after the events of i quit. After bringing the video game’s controversial (and, justifiably, beloved) cliffhanger to the screen in the Season 1 finale, the showrunners are already hitting the ground running on Season 2. Here’s what we know so far.
Mazin has made his intentions clear: he wants to adapt Part II, and wants to do it with Ramsay as Ellie. In an interview with ELLE.com in January, he said, “The amount of time it takes to get to the end of the story will be amazing to get to the right ending. “If I got to work on set with Bella Ramsay every day for the rest of my life, I’d be thrilled.”
Ramsey is also eager to return to the role, telling ELLE.com, “There are no limits for me. “They can do any number of games, any number of series they can do, and I’ll be here, going back to Canada.”
But what exactly that means for Season 2 is still unclear. Part II It would take several years for fans to be introduced to Ellie at the age of 19 in the video game series. (She was 14 i quit.) The story follows a now-adult Ellie as she hunts down a stranger known as Abby, following her and her group across the country to the desolate outskirts of Seattle. The game is visually violent, even more so i quit, though that’s not the only potential problem affecting the HBO series’ sophomore season. Perhaps the most immediate question relates to timing. Maybe explore the period between season 2 i quit And IIAnd the final season 3 adapted the rest Part II? Or the show will dive right in Part IIStyling Ramsay to look his age?
What we do know is that next season will not cover perfection No Part II. When asked how another game would be adapted for TV, Druckmann responded modestly GQ, “It’s more than one season.” He didn’t share much after that. “You noticed exactly how much we won’t say,” added Mazin jokingly. “But more than one fact is true.”
