Eva Green on Embracing Villainy in the Musketeer Saga

The actress talks about playing Milady de Winter in the two latest Three Musketeers movies.

Former Bond girl Eva Green plays Milady de Winter in two of director Martin Bourboulon’s films – The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan And The Three Musketeers: Milady, will be released next year. Here he talks about playing the baddie.

Are you a fan of Dumas’ books?

I had read The Three Musketeers at school, but I was particularly moved by Lana Turner’s dazzling performance as Milady in George Sidney’s adaptation. The sense of adventure and romance excited me a lot.

What appealed to you about this adaptation?

Milady’s character has been given more flesh and thus deviates from her traditional image. We understand why she became Milady. It also gives more body to the musketeers, who are often presented as boyish men in some adaptations.

How do you understand Milady’s figure?

In the collective unconscious, Milady is evil, mysterious, fearless, diabolical, willing to do anything to achieve her ends. In the second film we will understand why she became this unscrupulous woman. We will find her Achilles heel and therefore, a new milady, which I think is more human.

How did you prepare for the role?

I had to train for two months for the sword and dagger fight scenes. I rode first with Mario Luraski, then with the rider Margot Passafort, who works with him and who helped me to be less afraid of horses. I also did aikido.
All this allowed me to discover the inner strength of the character. I enjoyed working with the stunt guys, they were very patient, because I was clumsy.

Why is it fun to play an evil character?

It’s fun because it’s so far removed from the everyday life we live in. It lets you go, it liberates!

What was your favorite scene for the film?

I really enjoyed playing a fire-eater in the castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, with these magnificent masks and real musicians, at a ball among all the extras. It was extraordinary. A magical memory.
