Emmanuel Macron hires Gerard Mestralet to work on “21st century Suez Canal”
Information Le Figaro – The former Eng and Suez boss will represent France in a logistics corridor project linking India to Europe through the Arabian Peninsula, as an alternative to China’s new Silk Road.
It is now official. Emmanuel Macron has appointed Gerard Mestralet, former CEO of Engie and president of Suez, as special envoy for the logistics integration corridor project between Europe and Asia. Known by the English acronym Imec (India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor), this future corridor, aiming to provide an alternative to the new Chinese Silk Roads, aims to connect India to Europe through the Arabian Peninsula.
Imec was announced on September 9 during the G20 Summit in New Delhi. No fewer than seven heads of state and government then looked at his cradle: Joe Biden, Indian Narendra Modi, Saudi Mohammed bin Salman, Emirati Mohammed bin Zayed, Italian Giorgia Maloney, German Olaf Scholz, Emmanuel Macron as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
