Emma Stone: Before Poor Creatures, She Convinces Everyone With This Film Available On Netflix – Cinema News

Before “Poor Lives,” now in theaters, director Yórgos Lánthimos and Emma Stone collaborated on the film “The Favorite,” now available on Netflix.

On January 17, Yórgos Lánthimos unveiled his brand new film Poor Creatures. In this feature film that subverts the world of fairy tales, the Greek director directs Emma Stone as Bella, a young woman brought back to life who reinvents the ways of the world and society.

But Poor Creatures doesn’t mark the American filmmaker and actress’ first collaboration, as Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have already teamed up for The Favorite in 2018.

This semi-biopic immerses us in the English court in the 18th century, following the story of Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman), her favorite Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) and her rival Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz).

Fake historical biopic

Set against a backdrop of palace intrigue and war with the French Empire, La Favourite is the story of a particularly complex love triangle between a king weakened by real illness, and two opportunists willing to do anything to win his trust and favor.

Although the series was inspired by authentic historical figures, Yorgos Lanthimos did not hesitate to distance himself from reality by taking many liberties with the facts. Thus, the actors had great freedom in their interpretations, and the realizations (especially in the looks and costumes of the characters) were encouraged by the filmmaker.

prestigious awards

Behind closed doors, which broke the code of the traditional biopic, it was a huge success when it was released in French cinemas with almost half a million viewers. A critical triumph, the film also won numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Actress Oscar for Olivia Colman.

Remarkable fact: The British actress is definitely an expert in embodying the figures of the British monarchy. In addition to playing the Queen Mother in the film Royal Weekend, Olivia Colman was also awarded an Emmy Award in 2021 for her portrayal of Elizabeth II in the series The Crown!

Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favorite starring Emma Stone and Olivia Colman is now available on Netflix.
