Consumption of Maggi Cube and others: Removes Sal ambiguity from Health Department

Along with the adoption of legislation on HIV prevention, care and protection of people living with HIV, the honorable advisers asked other topical questions and all of general interest. This is the case for broth consumption in Guinea with various brands such as Maggi Cube.

Khaïté Sall, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health at the CNT

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Khati Sal, when asked about the issue, could not be clear: “We could not find studies on broth cubes, strictly speaking. But there is an analysis that has been done on Maggi cube which contains glutamate. It is a flavor enhancer that contains high amounts of sodium beyond the standards recommended by the World Health Organization, which causes cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes. It is a WHO analysis and not strictly speaking a study,” puts this senior executive from the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene into perspective.

If Khaïté Sall refrained from advising people not to use broth cubes in their daily diet, simple research shows the danger of this ingredient to the health of the population. Even if the cook has difficulty doing without it.

It is established that the main ingredients of the stock cube are: salt, maltodextrin, flavor enhancers (glutamate, guanylate, inosinate or yeast extract), oil, flavor. Depending on the product, there may also be meat or vegetable extracts and sugar.

But many dietitians-nutritionists agree that stock cubes contain more salt than the human body needs.

“It’s marketing,” says Frenchwoman Nathalie Negro, a dietitian-nutritionist. When these products claim “-25% salt”, that’s in relation to other products in the same range. Clearly, despite being (slightly) less salty, these stock cubes remain a disaster for your health! »

The main problem with dehydrated broth (whether beef, poultry or vegetable) is the salt content. » explains Nathalie Negro, dietitian-nutritionist.

Given the increasing number of cardiovascular patients, hypertensives and diabetics in the country, everyone should learn a lesson. Moreover, there are more and more people who prefer saumbara or soombla, extracted from nére seeds, a spice very well known in West Africa, to these stock cubes, despite its irresistible taste.
