Leaders of the United States Congress reached a budget agreement this Sunday for about $1.7 trillion (trillion in English) to finance the government through 2024. . But there is still a lack of broad commitment that would allow its approval as key dates when federal funding runs out and resistance from Republicans who want sharper spending cuts continue.
The agreement largely follows spending limits on defense and domestic programs that Congress established as part of a bill to temporarily suspend the federal government’s borrowing limit until this year’s presidential election.
It also makes some concessions to House Republicans, who considered the spending restrictions in that deal insufficient.
“This represents the most favorable budget deal Republicans have reached in more than a decade,” Johnson wrote.
The deal accelerates roughly $20 billion in already-agreed cuts to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and slashes roughly $6 billion in Covid-19 relief funds that were approved but not spent. According to Johnson’s letter.
The agreement must now be ratified by Congress and there is a high probability that there will be opposition from far-right Republicans in the lower house.
Biden said the deal “brings us one step closer to preventing an unnecessary government ‘shutdown’ and protecting important national priorities.”
“It reflects the level of funding I negotiated with both parties and signed into law last spring. It rules out deep cuts to programs that working families depend on,” he said in a statement.
“Challenging issues remain, but we remain committed to addressing the needs of the southern border and helping allies and partners facing serious threats in Israel, Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific. The Senate will not leave these national security challenges unanswered,” Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said in a joint statement. The statement said.
The hurdles in Congress also represent a blow for Biden on the foreign front, as the president has turned support for Ukraine and the Atlantic alliance into his policy banners.
