On New Year’s Day, Kyler Effinger, 30, of Park City, died after stepping into a plane’s turbine while waiting to take off at Salt Lake City International Airport with 100 passengers on board. In a video recently released by the Salt Lake City Airport Department, Finger can be seen running to a locked gate and trying to open it.
He speaks briefly with what appears to be an airport employee before running out of the room to bang on the window with his shoe. Then, according to footage from a separate camera, he takes off once more and opens another emergency exit door before running down the stairs.
A thermal imaging camera recorded video, which ended with the finger running toward the plane as it rolled smoothly. Additional video shows him being dropped off at the airport, going through security, entering the terminal and running out the door while throwing away his luggage. Effinger’s family believes that before he took a flight to Denver to visit his ailing grandfather, he experienced a mental health crisis.
