Riverdale star Charles Melton is set to appear in another film featuring his ill-fated relationship with Elizabeth Olsen.

Fresh off the series finale of The CW’s hit teen drama series Riverdale, Charles Melton (who played Riverdale High football player Reggie Mantle) stepped into his post-series career as he starred in Netflix’s true story May December.

Starring alongside Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, Melton played Joe Yoo, a young man who has been groomed and abused by his wife Elizabeth (Moore) since he was 13 years old.

And it looks like Melton is back in the saddle of being in another ill-advised relationship role, this time inspired in a less serious setting, as he’s been announced to star in a new film alongside Marvel star Elizabeth Olsen.

Starring in the dark comedy Love Affair opposite Melton Olsen

It was recently announced that Melton will star in the upcoming film Love Child opposite Olsen and directed by Todd Solondz, including Dark Horse and Winner-Dog.

According to The Film Stage, the movie synopsis reads: “The story follows 11-year-old Junior, an aspiring Broadway star obsessed with an inappropriate obsession with his mother (Olson). After orchestrating an accident that nearly kills her abusive father, she encourages the handsome man who lives in the family’s guesthouse to court her mother and become her new father. But when the two fall in love, Junior is so jealous that he is no longer the object of his mother’s attention that he hatches a plan to frame the man for his father’s murder.”

Solondz is known for his dark, socially conscious satirical style, so it’s no surprise that the film will lean more towards the dysfunctional side of the classic American family lifestyle.

“I’m excited to work with Elizabeth Olsen and Charles Melton on what will be a super fun and playful celebration of Hollywood movies,” Solondz said, adding that this will be his “most audience-friendly (film), as far as I’m concerned with ‘audience-friendly’ and Can be ‘commercial’.

Olsen herself expressed her excitement about the project, saying, “I’ve been a long-time fan of Todd’s work and collaborating with him on this film is a dream come true.”

Love Child is set to begin filming this spring with a 2025 release date, which could coincide with the 30th anniversary of his smash debut Welcome to the Dollhouse.
