Washington DC, United States.- President Joe Biden called President López Obrador yesterday, two days after the Mexican president requested an apology after the DEA investigated the alleged injection of drug money into his 2006 presidential campaign.
AMLO disqualified the publications as slander and suggested that bilateral cooperation on migration and medicine could be affected.
“In the spirit of their strong partnership … they discussed the challenges along our shared border and are committed to continuing their productive partnership,” the White House said in a statement.
In the conversation, López Obrador reaffirmed the Mexican government’s proposal to Biden, as stated in a ten-point statement by his office.
Among them, he “prefers not to build walls or close the border, because it does not solve the causes of migration or solve the problem. It is pure political-electoral propaganda,” the Mexican president said.
Last January 26, in an effort to convince Republicans to approve the bipartisan agreement negotiated in the Senate, Biden said he was willing to close the border with Mexico.
In addition, the Mexican government proposed other measures, such as the regularization of citizens who have been in the United States for more than five years, the sanction and suspension of 20 billion dollars annually to support poor countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Sanctions on Venezuela and Cuba to reduce migration flows.
López Obrador also proposed developing a joint development plan to receive migrants through legal channels in the United States, combat drug trafficking and the use of chemical drugs such as fentanyl, control the sale and export of weapons to Mexico, and promote industrialization. Trade within the framework of free trade agreements and reaffirm the commitment to maintain relations of cooperation, friendship and respect for sovereignty.
