Because of salt, we consume more than 1000 microplastics every year

The World Health Organization recommends no more than two grams of salt per day. This advice is not respected by the French who consume an average of four kilograms of salt. After the discovery of plastic in meat or water bottles, it is a new common food that is being singled out.

A new study conducted by Andalus University in Indonesia – and reported by the Daily Mail – examined the composition of table salt. Researchers have noted the presence of carcinogenic microplastics there. In particular, this study shows the existence of 33 microplastics per kilogram of table salt, which means that people can consume more than 1,140 particles per year.

Four microplastics

To reach this conclusion, scientists analyzed samples of 21 brands of table salt and found that each contained small pieces of plastic. “Salt can be contaminated by water taken from the sea to make salt, which contains microplastics, organic matter and sand particles, as well as during its production.

“All of the 21 salt samples analyzed contained microplastics. Inadequate and unsanitary salt production and contaminated seawater used as raw material contribute to salt contamination with microplastics, posing a risk to human health.“, summarize the researchers.

The study identified the presence of four different forms of microplastics in 21 salt samples. Thus, the researchers found that common fragments were (67.49%), followed by fibers (23.82%), films (6.08%) and granules (2.61%).
