The indictment against Navarro, 49, indicates the former official may have used the school district’s credit card to make personal purchases of more than $100,000 in 2022.
Navarro resigned his position in December 2022 before HB 7001 took effect, which prohibits elected public officials from representing the interests of third parties.
Expenses attributed to Navarro include food, household items, vacations and even two fake pregnancy bellies, which she is believed to have obtained to win back her ex-boyfriend.
The state prosecutor’s office released details of the case at a news conference Thursday. Navarro’s attorney said she will be released from prison under house arrest and will undertake to prove the legitimacy of the bail money. After being appointed by then-Republican Gov. Rick Scott in 2015, the former school board member represented District 7 in the Miami-Dade School District hierarchy. She was later elected to the post in 2016.
Navarro began her public service career in 1995 as a legislative assistant to members of Congress from Florida.
