Austin Butler and Callum Turner talk Masters of the Air

Screen Rant: This is a great show. It really puts you in the cockpit with other pilots, and it does a great job of preserving the history of the missions that these men flew on. Callum, this was the last time we spoke Boys in the boys

, you talked about the rigorous training and how it helped you bond between the actors. How to train for Master of Air Comparison?

Callum Turner: Completely different. Initially we had this two-week boot camp, which really bonded us beautifully. The boys in real life, they had this thing called crew blue, and that’s what kept them together. When you’re on a plane, you’re not just fighting for yourself, you’re fighting for your friend next to you, and you really can’t drop the ball and you feel responsible for everyone.

Every time they go up there are 10 people in it. That boot camp gave us that idea. Indeed, we have embodied each of them, because we understand how honorable what these people have done and it is an honor for us to represent them.

Austin, many of these stories are real. Can you talk about the responsibility of telling these stories and honoring these heroes?

Austin Butler: Absolutely. I know we all felt incredibly privileged and responsible to bring their stories to life with such honesty and care and passion, because what they did is true superheroes. They saved the world, they made the world a better place, and they were so young, the bravery they had is remarkable. To be a small part of bringing their stories to life is truly such a true, true honor.

Callum, would you describe the dynamic between John Egan and Gale Kleven and how you two created this relationship on screen?

Calum Turner: The beautiful thing about them is, they are yin and yang. They are chalk and cheese. They both joined before Pearl Harbor, and there’s this thing within them that’s instinctive, and they’re determined to fight evil in the face of adversity and put themselves on the line and sacrifice themselves for the greater good. It is the thing that bonds them. They are also the best pilots by a hundred by a million miles until Rosie comes along. That’s what they have, sometimes you just love someone and they love each other.

That’s how I felt about Austin from the moment I met him. I just fell in love with it. We had the same. We had this determination to honor this project and our work and these people in the best possible way and not let them down. Art imitates life in a sense. We only hung out for 10 months. Johnny Egan was Clevan’s best man at his wedding. It was a bond that was unbreakable and lifelong. You were talking about the video right?

Austin Butler: Yes.

Calum Turner: Oh, his nephew was talking.

Austin Butler: Yes. The other day at the premiere here in Los Angeles, Clevan’s nephew came and I got to talk to him for a long time and he was just a sweet, sweet man. He told me stories, but one of the main ones he said was, “I remember my uncle always talking about how his best friend in the world was Johnny Egan.” It was very touching for me.

Calum Turner: Yes. They were cute together.
