The Paris prosecutor’s office announced on Friday, February 9, the opening of an investigation into the latest cyber attacks suffered by two third-party payment operators, Viamedis and Almeris, possibly the biggest ever on record in France. According to estimates by the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties (Cnil), the data leak concerns more than 33 million French people.
Viamedis (a subsidiary of Malakoff complementary health insurers Humanis and Vyv) and Almerys (the independent Be-Ys group) are third-party payment operators on behalf of complementary health insurers. The anti-cybercrime division of the capital’s prosecutor’s office, contacted by AFP on Friday, said a preliminary investigation had been launched following complaints filed by two companies.
The investigation was handed over to the Cyber Crime Brigade of the Judicial Police. The investigation concerns violations of automated data systems, fraudulent collection of personal data and the crime of concealing a crime.
