Alzheimer’s disease can be transmitted by growth hormones

Alzheimer’s disease, in some cases, can be contagious. That’s the conclusion of a British study published in the journal Monday Nature Medicine and relayed by the Huffington Post. At issue: extractive growth hormone that was taken from dead humans and then given to patients.

Parallels with Creutzfeldt-Jakob

John Collinge’s team at the Institute of Prion Diseases at University College London (UCL) studied the cases of five patients who received injections of these hormones before 1985. It appears that these men were diagnosed with atypical Alzheimer’s disease, which is the origin of this treatment.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) caused by growth hormones caused 4% of deaths among 1,849 young British patients who received this treatment, according to a UCL study. But eight patients were affected at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Three died between the ages of 47 and 57 and five between the ages of 54 and 57, asserts world. Through genetic transmission, the development of pathology characterized by slow degeneration of neurons is excluded. The only thing these eight patients had in common was the use of growth hormones.

This means that Alzheimer’s disease can be transmitted in the same way as the incurable Creutzfeldt-Jakob prion diseases. Prion diseases are characterized by protein misfolding, which results in a chain reaction on cells, leading to damage to the central nervous system. The Huffington Post explains that Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by damage caused by a misfolded protein called amyloid beta peptide (also spelled beta-amyloid) and another called tau.

This study confirms what another function predicted: the link between these two groups of diseases. For British researchers, transmission of Alzheimer’s can only be “iatrogenic” or caused by a medical procedure. Here, injection of growth hormones. Which says that the degenerative disease is transmitted in some way other than genetics.
