When talking about the best memories of his career, Zdenek Styber immediately thought of his teammate Julian Alaphilippe’s win at Milan-San Remo in 2019.
At the age of 38, Zdenek Styber ended his career on Sunday during the cyclo-cross world championships. In front of his home crowd, in Tabor, the Czech finished 31st in a race won by Matthew van der Poel. On the sidelines of the event, the former Quick-Step rider spoke about his memories in an interview with L’Equipe.
A triple cyclo-cross world champion (2010, 2011, 2014), Stybar then had a brilliant career on the road, notably winning the Aneco Tour, a stage of the Tour de France, and the great classics (GP E3, Het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche). …). But another memory comes to mind.
“My dream was to win a monument, “Steby” explains. In Roubaix, I came close three times (6th after a fall at Carrefour de l’Arbre in 2013, second in 2015 and 2017) and unfortunately, it never happened. Yes, I regret it. At least I’ll always have the feeling that I had my chance and I didn’t miss it. I have also won all these monuments as a team. Roubaix with Philippe Gilbert (2019) or Flanders with Niki Terpstra (2018). And my greatest collective memory is Milan-San Remo with Julian Alaphilippe (2019). We crossed the line side by side with Viviani, Lampart, Philip Gilbert and myself. »
This beautiful tribute from Stybar says a lot about the state of mind that reigns at Quick-Step and what Alaphilippe can inspire in his teammates.
