A new volcanic eruption has begun in southwest Iceland, not far from Reykjavík and its airport. Residents of the village of Grindavik have been evacuated once again.
A new volcano erupted on Sunday morning north of the town of Grindavik in Iceland (southwest), following a previous eruption in the same region in December, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) announced.
According to Icelandic Public Radio and Television, seismic activity intensified overnight and residents of Grindavik were evacuated around 3 a.m. (local time). “A breach has opened on either side of the defenses being built north of Grindavik

This is Iceland’s fifth volcanic eruption in two years, the previous one occurring on the evening of December 18 in an area southwest of the capital Reykjavik.
Grindavik, a small town of 4,000 inhabitants, was evacuated on 11 November as a precaution. Since then, residents were allowed to return briefly before an immediate evacuation last night.
