A new game died, it’s a massacre!

A hard blow for Minecraft fans. The developers are announcing the end of this somewhat special game within the iconic license that already boasts over 100 million monthly players.

Minecraft is much more than a global hit, it is a real phenomenon that is becoming more and more widespread. 13 years after its release, Mojang’s sandbox-like excellence still attracts more than 166 million monthly active users. Despite the decline in December, the number of players remains simply astounding, especially since it continues to grow year over year. Since the game launched in 2011, many spin-offs have come out but none of them have been as successful as the original. And besides, a new title, which wanted to give a different experience, is leaving in turn.

A new Minecraft game is still abandoned, and three!

Mojang is trying more than anything to develop the Minecraft franchise, but for the moment, it’s not quite working. With the closure of Telltale Games, the point’n’click story mode was dropped entirely and thus did not make it past Season 2. Subsequently, the mobile augmented reality spin-off, Earth, also folded after two years of launch. Hack’n’slash Minecraft Dungeons, which was more accessible than the genre’s big names, also ended in September 2023. The developers actually released the final update 1.17 for the form, but have since moved on to something else. A real carnage that is unfortunately not over.

After the final update of “Lost Legends: Snow vs Snots,” which will be available in January, teams are closing costs with Minecraft Legends. The RTS attempt failed for all audiences and this spin-off therefore joins its predecessors in the flop department. As a reminder, the software was released on April 18, 2023, and so it won’t even last a year.

Since launch, we’ve listened to community feedback and introduced a number of changes to improve the game. Now that that’s done, we’ll stop development. While we won’t be releasing new content (updates, lost legends or DLC) for Minecraft Legends, the fun doesn’t stop there.

Our current Lost Legends challenges will remain free and you can still earn rewards for winning. Of course, we will also continue to provide technical support to players, and we will not remove any features from the game. PvP (PvP) and co-op modes will be fully functional, so you can still play no matter what you choose to do. Fight alone on piglines or with (or against) friends.

An actual feature film with the star of Super Mario the Movie

As we can read from the press release, Legends will not receive new content, but will still be functional for a while. It is certain that the servers will be shut down sooner or later, but few active players have some leeway to enjoy and find the latest update.

This series of failures does not affect the morale of the soldiers because Minecraft is in the making. Another very special project, as it will be a live-action feature film and not an animated one. To play the pixelated characters, we’ll have actors Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Daniel Brooks (Peacemaker), Sebastian Eugene Henson, Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) and Jack Black (Bowser in Super Mario the Movie). The Minecraft movie will hit theaters in 2025, more than 10 years after its announcement. Teams will just have to cross their fingers that it won’t be another flop like the spin-off games.
