Weekly Commentary (updated Jan 8, 2024): The Best Supporting Actress category can be described in one word: messy.
It’s not “messy” with the quality of talent in the race as there are more than a dozen powerhouse performers vying for recognition. That’s because, none other than Golden Globe winner Da’Vine Joey Randolph for “The Holdovers” seems “sure” for the slot.
People “Emily Blunt!” Before screaming as they read this on their computer or phone screens, I too feel good about our British star snagging her long overdue nomination for “Oppenheimer.” But we’ve been here before with Blunt (several times, in fact). Seeing “Ashchi” for her turns in “A Quiet Place,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “The Devil Wears Prada,” the rug always seems to get pulled out from under us on nomination morning. Still, we stay the course and hope to call her name.
Besides that, the number of women predicted by pundits as the sole nominees for their respective films is raising some red flags. It is known that many members of the Academy do not watch many films. It often explains why you see films getting multiple nominations.
It’s not unprecedented for most acting lineups to include lone wolves — in actor, it last happened in 2007 (Ryan Gosling, Peter O’Toole, and eventual winner Forest Whitaker), and in actress, it was in 2014 (winners) Julianne Moore, Marion Cotillard, and Rosamund Pike). However, in supporting actress, you have to go back to the 1987 lineup that included Norma Aleandro (“Gabby: A True Story”), Anne Ramsey (“Throw Momma from the Train”) and Annie Sothern (“The Whale of August”). happens. ). This has never happened since the Best Supporting Actor category was created in 1938.
This echoes two safe options to follow when predicting a lineup: be limited to the number of single nominated performances, or predict additional nominations for their movies elsewhere.
Based on what is known so far, the only possibilities listed are Daniel Brooks or Taraji P. Henson (“The Color Purple”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), Rachel McAdams (“Are You God? It’s Me, Margaret” ) and Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”). That doesn’t mean the films won’t pull in additional names elsewhere; Only where they are is a viable outcome.
The SAG Awards nominations to be announced Wednesday will address some of these questions.
