Popular gaming platform Roblox has unveiled its latest take on virtual fashion trends in the metaverse via 2023 Digital Expression, Fashion & Beauty Trends Report. The new comprehensive report draws on survey data from 1,500 active Gen Z members in the US and UK who use platforms such as Roblox.
Christina Wootton, director of partnerships at Roblox, highlighted the platform’s global reach, with more than 70 million daily visitors worldwide, stressing the importance of users representing themselves authentically, especially among friends.
The report’s key findings highlight the growing influence of virtual fashion on Generation Z. Notably, 84 percent of respondents admitted that the style of their virtual avatar has some influence on their fashion choices in the real world. Additionally, 54 percent of respondents expressed inspiration drawn from avatar fashion, with 56 percent saying the style of their avatar matters more than their personal clothing choices.
Roblox’s commitment to virtual fashion extends to partnerships with fashion organizations, introducing features such as layering technology that allows for the creation of hyper-realistic digital clothing. The recent emergence of Roblox Limiteds has resulted in limited edition wearable avatars, contributing to their rarity and enthusiasm, even for resale.
Contrary to the idea that the metaverse’s hype is waning, Roblox reported strong financial results in the third quarter, recording $839.5 million in bookings and $713.2 million in revenue, up 20 percent and 38 percent, respectively. The platform also saw a 20 percent increase in daily active users, reaching a total of 70.2 million gamers.
The report goes into detail on various statistics, citing a 38 percent surge in avatar updates and a 15 percent surge in digital fashion and accessory purchases in the first three quarters of 2023. Additionally, 84 percent of respondents emphasized the importance of digital fashion, with 53 percent seeing a significant growth trend from 2022.
The Roblox report also demonstrates the platform’s role in empowering Gen Z to express themselves and experiment with their style, bridging the virtual and real worlds of fashion.
