NWEA Launches New Roblox Experience to Engage Students in Physics Immersion

Created by Filament Games under the guidance of NWEA Science experts and funded by a Roblox grant. The new immersive experience provides a robust assessment tool for students and teachers.

PORTLAND, OR. and MADISON, Wisconsin November 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — NVEA K-12 Evaluation and Research Organization, announced today Dash distance, a new science-focused experience for Roblox, the global immersive platform for communication and connection. Through the development of Distance Dash, NWEA was able to explore innovative ways to use 3D immersion to engage students in science learning and assess their achievement in the subject.

“We are thrilled that this experience is now available to students through Roblox,” said Tyler Matta, vice president of engineering education at NWEA. “We delved into this project to really explore how students engage with science and how aspects of games can be used in other elements of learning, including assessment. It was a truly learning experience for us and we appreciate the support of Roblox and Filament Games.”

NWEA’s scientific content and measurement experts provided vision, direction, evaluation, and research expertise for the project. The Roblox Community Foundation (RCF) provided NWEA with the opportunity to work with Filament Games. developer of educational games, known for projects such as Mission: Mars intended for the Science Museum, Bostonalso hosted on the Roblox platform.

“We are excited to join forces with NWEA in an innovative partnership that connects learning with assessment in an authentic and playful way. Together we have created dynamic, playful learning experiences that promise to improve learning outcomes for all children,” he said. Dan WhiteCEO of Filament Games.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and other state multidimensional science standards emphasize that a rich and equitable science education depends on framing science teaching, learning, and assessment around students’ interests and experiences. Using this as the basis for the experience, students playing Distance Dash will have to launch two vehicles with different loads and ensure they reach the finish line in perfect synchronization. They will need to fine-tune the forces based on the assigned masses and predict the results for maximum acceleration while maintaining synchronized arrival. The goals of experience assessment include identifying patterns in data, understanding principles of acceleration, optimizing the application of force, making accurate predictions, applying Newton’s Second Law, and solving problems. Collaboration and social learning are encouraged as students navigate the exciting world of physics by strategically manipulating forces, demonstrating precision, and working together to become champions in this ultimate test of scientific skills and teamwork.

NWEA is among the first grant recipients of the Russian Chess Federation. Founded in 2021, RCF offers grants to educational organizations and developers to create innovative teaching methods and curricula using the platform effectively.
