OpenAI buys Global Illumination, its first major acquisition

For the first time in its seven-year history of OpenAI, the company behind the renowned ChatGPT has bought New York-based startup Global Illumination, a company focused on in creating creative tools with artificial intelligencewhich could be an important quantum leap for the OpenAI chatbot itself, or open the door to new products.

Although the details of the purchase were not disclosed, this is a very relevant move for OpenAI and for the future of its technology. Global Illumination, although small in size, is a well-known company in the industry that is only three years old. Its founders included in their curriculum working and creating very valuable products at companies like InstagramFacebook, YouTube, Google, Pixar and Riot Games.

In fact, its founder Thomas Dimson was instrumental in iterating Instagram’s discovery algorithms. AND I am actively involved in the design and creation of the Overview tab.classification feeds and stories, IGTV and more.

Global Illumination talent could be the key to OpenAI

Global Illumination also has a very interesting product for the future of OpenAI: Biomes, an open source multiplayer sandbox game (MMORPG) similar to Minecraft but designed to be played online. A technology that could be very important for OpenAI and the deployment of future tools over the web.

It’s unclear what will happen to Biomes now, as OpenAI doesn’t seem to be very interested in learning. but yes in the talent and technology of the company.

Although OpenAI was originally a non-profit company, the emergence of venture capital and multi-million dollar investments will force the company to change its dynamics and seek strike business, and Global Illumination’s technology and talent can be the starting point.

With the emergence of new players such as Facebook or Google in a sector in which OpenAI appears to be the leader, the war for the future of AI is going through mass and corporate adoption. Thus, having an attractive and easy-to-use product that can be easily integrated by third parties, trick that will determine the winner. OpenAI is taking the necessary steps to achieve this goal.
