Fnatic suffered their first international VCT loss this year against LOUD during the Valorant Champions playoffs. LOUD, the Brazilian team, dominated the EMEA team with a convincing 2-0 victory over Acsent and Lotus.
At the post-match press conference, Fnatic commented on their defeat. Jake ‘Boaster’ Howlett, IGL Fnatic, blamed his slow start and lack of momentum afterwards as factors that worked against him. Losing the pistol round and falling behind in the bonus phase made it difficult for the team to recover.
This loss sent Fnatic to the bottom bracket for the first time in the VCT season. When asked if exhaustion played a role in the loss, Timofey “Chronicle” Khromov admitted that although the team felt slightly tired after most of the tournament’s matches, this did not directly contribute to their defeat by LOUD. The Chronicle claimed that his mistakes were not due to exhaustion, but rather to focusing too much on the match itself.
When it comes to managing emotions before games, Booster shared the same sentiment. He stressed the importance of wanting to win, but not letting that desire influence your play style. The desire to win too often leads to the fact that we play differently than usual.
This match against LOUD at Valorant Champions 2023 was not the first meeting between Fnatic and LOUD. The teams previously met in the VCT LOCK // IN Grand Finals, where Fnatic managed to fend off a LOUD counterattack and stage an impressive comeback on the final map of the series.
Fnatic’s journey in the Valorant World Cup will continue in the lower bracket, with their next match scheduled for August 18th.
