Review: Mamma Mia! (2008) – The Autistic World

Mama Mia! Inspired by a musical piece based on ABBA songs. Amanda Seyfried plays Sophie in this film. She is a young woman raised by her mother (Donna, played by Meryl Streep), who does not know her father and is about to get married. However, when she wants to invite the man who took her life to her wedding, the young woman discovers Donna’s old diary. So he invites three potential fathers to the wedding. In this way, it pretends that it was the mother who made it. This happens without telling him anything.
Mama Mia! It’s a fun musical with a strong cast
It is a highly entertaining film, with a strong enough cast to overcome the dramatic artificiality of the plot and characters. So, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan very competently play the roles of the alleged parents of the bride. However, the female cast is even better. That’s because Amanda Seyfried shows charisma as Sophie, while Julie Walters and Christine Baranski are hilarious as Donna’s best friends. This is the best Meryl Streep character.
Interestingly, I initially saw this film the same day I saw Sophie’s Choice (1982), a heavy and sad drama that also starred Streep and won her an Oscar. This experience made the talent of the actress even more apparent. In fact it doesn’t feel like both the characters are played by the same person. After all, while in the 1982 film he gave a very poignant performance of a sad and serious character, here he is light and fun. That is, everything from voice to expression is completely different in both these roles.
There isn’t a musical number that doesn’t include Mamma Mia!
Meanwhile, director Phyllida Lloyd shows wisdom by not giving too much prominence to the silly story and preferring musical numbers. This option makes the task super fun for the ABBA lover. Besides this, the actor is also at ease in rendering the songs, which have been choreographed quite delightfully. Also, there isn’t a number in the film that doesn’t completely cheer you up.
Also, the filmmaker has given a perfect rhythm to the film. Due to this, time does not pass for the viewer while watching it. Humor is another strength of the film, which makes everything funnier. In addition, the photography should also be mentioned for taking advantage of the Greek coastal landscapes to create a very colorful look.
