Barbie director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig said that early in the film’s development, the idea of replacing the actors’ legs with computer graphics was considered. This was to reproduce the famous arched feet of the doll, but the idea was rejected.
“There was a big argument in the beginning,” Gerwig said on the Australian show The Project (via Variety). “Everyone said, ‘Are you going to CGI all the stages?’ And I thought, ‘Oh my God, no! It’s scary! It’s a nightmare’. Plus, Margot (Robbie) has the best legs. She has these beautiful dancer’s legs. She should just grab a bar and do that (bowing legs).”
And that’s exactly what happened. In a recent interview with Time, Gerwig explained that Robbie used a barbell to create the famous moment in the film’s first trailer, where she appears with her doll’s arched legs. The actress herself wanted to perform the scene as she refused to use a foot double.
“The scene took eight takes. (Margot Robbie) had to hold onto the bar to keep her legs flexible. And, yes, those are her feet,” Gerwig said.

The synopsis reads, “A doll living in Barbieland gets kicked out for not being perfect enough and goes on an adventure in the real world.”
In addition to Margot Robbie, the cast includes Ryan Gosling (La La Land) and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as two versions of Kane; Will Ferrell as the CEO of the toy company; and America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters), Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Emma Mackey (Sex Education).
The live-action Barbie is directed by Little Women’s Greta Gerwig. She also co-wrote the screenplay for Marriage Story with Noah Baumbach.
The first trailer of Barbie almost took the internet by storm and the film is buzzing with anticipation.
Barbie will premiere in Brazil on July 20.
