Don’t Look Up (2021)
Adam McKay’s film was heavily criticized by the specialized press. It has been described as a confusing film full of messages, none of which leave out the United States. However, the audience is in favor of it and it is one of the most watched movies on Netflix.
Many viewers believe that it is a fun story, and though it is true that the film is a waste of wide shots, but above all, it is an entertaining film that manages to send a very powerful message to the society. If after watching the movie you still believe that society has survived, then you are living in a bubble.
In 2017 Mother! After its premiere, it seemed that no one could agree whether or not to like the film Venice Film Festival attendees saw for the first time. There were also those who believed that it was a risky but perfect project by Darren Aronofsky and held it as one of the achievements of his career. On the other hand, critics emerged who considered the film a failure.
This panorama reached the theaters and a big controversy arose. The film starring Jennifer Lawrence received many complaints about its graphic violence, but at the same time, there were voices who continued to see it as a work of genius. What’s up mom!? In this matter it depends more on one’s opinion than on any other.
Sixth Day (2000)
When Arnold Schwarzenegger signed on to star in The Sixth Day, he did so in the belief that it would turn his career around. It was the late 1990s, when Action Hero had started doing comedies like Junior and Um Heroi de Brinquedo – by the way, nothing against the latter – and he wanted to reinvent himself. The effort proved routine, as Roger Spottiswoode’s film was panned by critics.
The truth is that it didn’t fare too well with the public, but at least it has a fan base. Having Schwarzenegger as the protagonist has its advantages, especially the fact that the actor is loved by a large portion of the public. This factor, along with the passage of time and nostalgia, make film a good form of entertainment for many people.
The Witch (2016)
Depending on who you talk to, people have good or bad things to say about witches. Those in its favor would say that this is a great horror film, with an engaging atmosphere and a clever story. Those who are against it will define it as a film that doesn’t live up to the genre, that promises a lot in the beginning and doesn’t really deliver in the end.
Robert Eggers, similar to The Lighthouse – another controversial film – released his own perspective on witchcraft in 2016. No one doubts his genius with photography and staging, but the plot and, above all, the pace of events have been widely debated.
Here the controversy has become a bit deeper. The franchise of the famous squad fighting supernatural got a new sequel with a cast made up exclusively of women and controversy appeared almost immediately. Most of the public did not accept that Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore had been “substituted” and rejected what director Paul Feig wanted to present in Ghostbusters.
On the other hand, there were people who welcomed the 2016 film as another commendable film. Not everyone liked it, but they gave him the benefit of the doubt. final call? Good reception among critics, but low ratings among the public. Interestingly, in the sequel, Ghostbusters – Beyond, the exact opposite happened. It did not please the critics, but was a good success with the public.
