In the World Cup in Qatar 2022, Artificial Intelligence was used.
The sports industry continues to generate events that are relevant around the world. As in the case of the Olympic Games, one of the most anticipated events in all countries, and in those of 2024 it was already announced that it will have technology with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
According to data from the International Olympic Committee, in the corresponding years 2017-2021 it entered 7.6 billion dollars, an amount that represents 33.3 percent more than the previous four-month period.
Likewise, the source indicates that the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games implied that the organism entered 4 thousand 300 million dollars in 2021, according to the last financial report of the IOC.
Other IOC income was the sale of audiovisual rights and represented income of 3.1 billion dollars in 2021. Of these, 1.6 billion dollars came from America, while 842.5 million dollars came from Asia, $606 million from Europe, $77.6 million from Oceania and another $17.4 million from Africa.
AI will be present at the Olympic Games
For the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the French National Assembly approved the use of video surveillance with artificial intelligence, with the aim of identifying suspicious events or abnormal behavior to guarantee the safety of the sporting event and that of its attendees.
According to the French Ministry of the Interior, the idea of implementing this technology in security cameras, which will have artificial intelligence algorithms, is not to identify people or profiles, but rather predetermined situations such as “fires, traffic jams, abandoned packages or movements of crowds”.
With the implementation of this technology, the authorities will be able to decide if there is a need to intervene or not and how the procedure should be to guarantee the security of the event, since it brings together people from all over the world.
The use of this technology has created a debate among many organizations where human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International, assure that using AI in the next Olympic Games could transform France into “a dystopian surveillance state”, that is, into a country with rules that are unethical and that would promote “the large-scale violation of rights.”
As an example, Lisa Belluco, who is part of the political party Europe Ecologie Les Verts, that biometric data will be needed to carry out video surveillance, which will allow the identification of people on the street.
AI has already become a widely used technological tool in the sports industry, as an example in the Qatar 2022 World Cup they used artificial intelligence to detect fouls during matches.
At that time, this system was based on the images captured by 12 cameras installed under the roof of the stadium, which capture all the movements of the ball.
And this is how technology continues to be used in many industries, where entertainment, sports, and others already do.
