The Stars achieved their fourth consecutive victory on Tuesday by defeating the Gigantes del Cibao 2-1 in a match held at the Julián Javier Stadium in this city and corresponding to the autumn-winter 2022-2023 baseball tournament.
Rainer Núñez was the “Star Player” of the Stars when he hit a home run in the fourth inning to even the score at one run apiece.
With the victory, the green flag team (19-22) came within a game of third place in the standings, occupied by the Giants (20-21).
Oscar de la Cruz (1-2), who scored the win in relief, led four relievers who didn’t allow an opponent’s run. Likewise, they came to retire 12 Giants batters in a row until José Sirí broke that streak with a double in the bottom of the eighth inning and two outs.
The setback was for Juan Minaya, who allowed the run to the Stars’ advantage in the seventh inning. The save was credited to Ronel Blanco, his fifth of the tournament, by working an inning and a third, despite facing problems in the ninth inning by placing players on third and second with two outs, but was able to dominate Eric with a groundout down the mound Philia.
For the Stars, Phillips Valdez started on the mound, who worked five innings of three hits, one run, one transfer and three strikeouts. He was followed by Oscar de la Cruz (2.0), Gerson Moreno (0.2) and Blanco (1.1).
Instead, Wily Peralta opened for the Giants, with three innings of two hits and three fanned out batters. He was escorted by Logan Ondrusek (3.0), Juan Minaya (1.0), Enrique Burgos (1.0) and Michael Ynoa (1.0)
The Giants were the first to put a number on the board. It happened in the bottom of the second inning as a result of an uncontrolled pitch (Wild Pitch) from the starter for the Stars Phillips Valdez, which Kelvin Gutiérrez took advantage of to score from the third.
In the fourth inning, the Stars evened the score at one run apiece after Rainer Núñez homered to left field.
In the seventh, the visitors took control of the game by Rodolfo Durán’s sacrifice fly through the right field.
