SEVILLE, Dec. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The General Directorate of the University Space of the University of Seville (US) already has two architectural proposals for the new Faculties of Medicine, on the Macarena campus, and Pharmacy, in Reina Mercedes, after the jury failed the Idea Competition of Architecture convened by the university institution in January 2022. In both cases, the proposed solutions could be proposed in phases so that the impact on the activity of the center is “minimal”.
The Rectorate of the Hispalense already informed when presenting the Ideas Competition for Medicine and Pharmacy that its intention was to start the works of these two new centers, at least, from 2024. The reality at the moment is that the impact of the increase in Costs have paralyzed two construction projects that were already underway, such as the Polytechnic Lecture Hall, in La Cartuja, and Agronomica, in Pablo de Olavide.
The winning idea in the case of Medicine has been the one presented by the study by Pablo Manuel Millán Millán, who offers “an interesting solution to the permeability of the block, choosing two reference levels that allow the construction of two strata, in which the different circulations are resolved in section, generating empty spaces both of a public and university nature”, explained the US in a note sent to Europa Press.
The jury has valued that “apparently” it seems to be an excavated project, “but it really is the result of the choice of those references that are resolved in a clean section. The winning project manages to alleviate the density that the Faculty of Medicine currently suffers from a strategy that opens a field of possibilities in its future applicability”. The design attends in “a singular way” to the plot and memory of the Hospital de las Cinco Llagas.
The second prize has been awarded to Francisco Javier Terrados Cepeda, whose proposal is “sustainable from the environmental and social points of view”, which gives “great quality to the university collective spaces”. “In a radical way, it solves the transversal connectivity of the block through a clearly formalized street. It represents a measured and coherent proposal with plenty of technical solvency”, the jury assessed. The third prize in the Ideas Competition for the new Faculty of Medicine has been declared void.
In the case of Pharmacy, the winning project is the one presented by Morales de Giles Arquitectos. It is a proposal that addresses the “pre-existence of the original project of the center with the maximum of its reuse and recovery”. The distribution of the spaces has been valued “with special emphasis”, concentrating on the ground floor the collective uses. The second prize went to José Antonio Carbajal Navarro.
In this case, it is a project that stems from a previous strategy based on “fragmentation, successfully articulating the pre-existence of the original building”. Finally, José Ignacio Sánchez-Cid Endériz has won the third prize. His project articulates “various scales” to resolve the program of uses in a “volumetric composition clearly linked to the Port of Seville”. He proposes a basement parking floor that determines the decrease in the enhancement of the existing space next to the Hernando Colón Residence Hall.
The University of Seville launched two separate ideas competitions at the beginning of the year in order to “have a range of reflections and proposals that, through the exercise of quality architecture, resolve the functional conflicts that have been generated and respond to the demand for spaces for teaching and research activities that the faculties of Pharmacy and Medicine deserve”.
