Yordan Álvarez DESERVED an award from Shohei Ohtani in MLB 2022 – SwingCompleto

By Jesus Perez Vichot (Chuchi)

Last Monday when the winner of the Edgar Martínez Award, given to the best designated hitter of the season, was announced, I couldn’t believe that the winner was the Japanese Shohei Ohtani. The Angels phenom is probably the best baseball player on the planet right now. He does everything excellently on the field, a unique talent for hitting, running and even pitching. But this award is given exclusively to the best designated hitter of the year, not the most complete player.

“Showtime” wins the award for the second year in a row. There is no doubt about his quality as a hitter, however, this year the one deserving of this recognition should have been the Cuban Yordan Álvarez. In fact, the Astros slugger should be the designated hitter chosen in the All MLB 2022 first team and he already won the Silver Slugger, with a spectacular campaign.

Perhaps the fact that Yordan played in 77 games as a designated hitter (he also played left field) hurt him when it came to being selected to win the Edgar Martinez Award this year (he finished in second place). But you also have to keep in mind that in the 157 games in which Ohtani took turns at bat, he did it both ways (hitter and pitcher) and as designated hitter. Therefore this should not be the impediment.

To be selected the All MLB Team, the vote of the fans is taken into account, which represents fifty percent and the other half is through the vote of a panel of baseball writers. The Edgar Martínez Award is voted for by broadcasters, reporters, and public relations departments from both leagues (previously only the American League).

Let’s go over some of the numbers these two phenomenal hitters put up in the 2022 season:

Yordan homered every 12.7 times at bat, Ohtani every 17.2. The one from Houston drove in a run every 4.8 times at bat and the one from Los Angeles (AL) every 6.2. The Cuban struck out every 4.4 times at bat and the Japanese every 3.6.

Yordan finished in the top 10 in the American League in: OBP (2nd), SLG (2nd), OPS (2nd), home runs (3rd), runs scored (4th), batting average (4th), RBI (5th) and Total Bases (8th).

Ohtani finished in the top ten in the AL in: Triples (4th), games played (4th), home runs (4th), SLG (5th), OPS (5th), total bases (5th), RBI (7th) , runs scored (8th) and appearances at bat (9th).

“Air Yordan” with runners in scoring position hit .314/.429/.492/.921 with 4 home runs and 55 RBIs in 118 at-bats. While “Showtime” in these instances did it for .314/.438/.775/1.213 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs in 102 official at-bats.

I am one of those who think that nobody deserves the MVP award more than the Japanese. But in this case it is only about choosing the best designated hitter of the year and in this aspect the Cuban was the most outstanding. Every day the delivery of the different prizes awarded by MLB lose more credibility (with some exceptions).

The decision of the voters is respected, but there are cases that are very evident. Now it comes to my mind who didn’t vote for Jeter for the HOF? Some go to extremes and the deserving or favorites that appear on the ballots pay the consequences. The truth is that the Cuban was deprived of obtaining this award and the Japanese won the award for the second consecutive year.
