(CNN) — Real Madrid will face Liverpool in the round of 16 of the Champions League, in a rematch of last season’s final, according to the draw made on Monday.
The Spanish beat Liverpool 1-0 in Paris in May to win their 14th European Cup.
The 2022 final was overshadowed by chaos outside the stadium and there was widespread criticism of the treatment of fans at the hands of the French authorities deployed for the May match.
This Monday’s draw also determined the clash between Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich.
The Parisians finished second in their group, behind Benfica, after the last day, and now they will have to face the team that beat them in the only final played by PSG in 2020.
On the other hand, Antonio Conte will return to Italy to face Milan with his Tottenham Hotspur team, while Chelsea will face Borussia Dortmund.
Pep Guardiola will continue his quest for the Champions League trophy that has eluded him for 11 years when his Manchester City side take on German side RB Leipzig.
Real Madrid vs Liverpool, a Champions League classic
Real Madrid and Liverpool have met twice in the final of the competition in the last five seasons, with the Spanish team emerging victorious on both occasions.
Real also beat Liverpool in two legs in the 2020/21 season and have not lost a game against the Reds in their previous six meetings.
The last win came in the round of 16 on a famous night at Anfield in 2009, when Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres inspired the home team to a 4-0 victory.
If Liverpool want to emulate that iconic performance, they will have to turn the tables – Jürgen Klopp’s side are a long way from the Premier League title race – before hosting their rival, who won their Champions League with ease and already has control in the League.
