Director James Cameron has talked about a sequel to “Avatar” ever since the film opened in 2009 and became the highest grossing of all time (“Avengers: Endgame” surpassed it in 2019).

The powerful science fiction film is set on a distant moon called Pandora. It follows human Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as he befriends the natives (called the Na’vi) through the use of a genetically engineered body.

The sequel picks up more than a decade later and will focus on Sully, his partner Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their new family.

Many original cast members are back

Along with the return of Worthington and Saldaña, we will also see Giovanni Ribisi, who was the lead corporate manager of the human mining project on Pandora in the first film.

In addition, two actors whose characters died in the first film will return. Sigourney Weaver, who played Grace Augustine, will be back, but she won’t be playing the same character.

Stephen Lang, who played villain Miles Quaritch, is also set to return to the screen.

There will also be new faces

Kate Winslet will join Cameron for the first time since he starred in his other big box office hit, “Titanic” (1997).

Winslet will play a free diver named Ronal, a Na’vi who inhabits the waters of Pandora, called Metkayina.

Cliff Curtis (“Blow,” “Training Day,” “Whale Rider”) will play Tonowari, the leader of the Metkayina.

Edie Falco and Michelle Yeoh were chosen to appear in the film, and Vin Diesel said in a 2019 Instagram post that he would also be joining the cast. However, there are no details yet on who he will play.

Water will be a main theme of the sequel

As its title suggests, we’re going to see more of what goes on below Pandora’s surface in this movie.

To carry out these scenes, a huge 900,000-gallon capacity was built in New Zealand for the sequels.

In 2020, Winslet told The Hollywood Reporter that she had to hold her breath for more than seven minutes to do the underwater scenes.

Like the first film, the technology used to make “Avatar: The Way of Water” is groundbreaking.

In addition to filming underwater, Cameron and the special effects team at Wētā FX developed an underwater motion capture system for the performances.

The equipment had never been used before this film and took a year and a half to develop.

And, like the first film, Cameron plans to push the boundaries of 3D to present “the most immersive 3D available,” he said at CinemaCon 2022 via video message.

“We’re pushing those limits even further, with high dynamic range 3D, high frame rate, higher resolution, and greater reality in our visual effects,” he said.

All sequels will be standalone movies.

Also at CinemaCon 2022, “Avatar” franchise producer Jon Landau gave some insight into how the sequels will be told. He noted that they will all be stand-alone stories, meaning each sequel will have an ending.

However, the family that Sully and Neytiri have formed will be a common thread between all of them.

The first teaser trailer came out in May 2022

Although it was initially shown in 3D in theaters ahead of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” opening weekend, the teaser is now available online.

Regardless of what format you view it in, the images are stunning.
