An outbreak of cases of monkeypox infection It has drawn the attention of the population and specialists at an international level. It is a disease whose symptoms resemble, to a lesser degree, those observed in the past in subjects with smallpox: fever, headache, muscle and back pain during the first five days, in addition to rashes on areas of the body. Despite the fact that experts point out that the current form of contagion of the virus between people is unknown, they realized that many of the cases in Europe were related to the fluid exchange in sexual relations, but is it a sexually transmitted infection?
Monkeypox or “simian orthopoxvirus” is a disease whose pathogen can be transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. Several cases have been detected in Europe and North America and it is a disease originating in Africa that usually heals spontaneously. Symptoms last between 14 and 21 days.

According to Dr. Mauricio Rodríguez, who is an academic at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), monkeypox has low mortality rates.
The specialist points out that the pathogen causing the infection belongs to the same family as the smallpox virus (Orthopoxvirus) that was eradicated in 1929.

Rodríguez indicated through a statement that there are people who have infected their partners through sexual intercourse, however, monkeypox is not a sexually transmitted disease, since the virus spreads through contact with an already infected person. and through contact with bodily secretions.
Although monkeypox is spread through close contact, it is not linked solely to sexual intercourse.
The doctor added that although the disease does not represent such a serious problem, one must be attentive to the evolution of the smallpox outbreak.
