Julia Fox sparked mixed reactions online after defending Amber Heard amid her libel trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Heard is being sued by Depp for $50 million for implying that he abused her in an op-ed in the Washington Post in 2018. Although she didn’t name him, he says his accusations impacted his ability to work. As court proceedings in the libel trial resume after a week-long hiatus, the high-profile lawsuit has garnered massive attention from fans and celebrities, including Chris Rock and Depp’s ex-fiancée Jennifer Grey. They gave their opinion on the lawsuit.
Now the actress Uncut Gems shared his opinion on the lawsuit. In what appears to be an Instagram comment left under a social media post on May 14, Fox claims that Heard could not have been abused by Depp because she was not in a position of physical or financial power over him.
“Error. She never had the power in the relationship to abuse him,” Fox commented. “Did she hit him? Yes. Was he an abuse? No. You have to have power to be able to abuse it. She was 25 years old. It is clear that he was always much more powerful, even physically and financially.
The comment sparked mixed reactions online after a Twitter user shared a screenshot of the Instagram post. “We love Julia Fox”, they wrote in a tweet that now has more than 24,000 likes.
Singer-songwriter Aubrey O’Day strongly disagreed with Fox’s opinion, calling it “garbage.”
“A lot of people without money, short, skinny and not famous have abused their partner,” he replied to the tweet. “Abuse is simply cruel and violent treatment of a person… power is not a necessary factor. Less powerful people abuse their more powerful partner out of jealousy all the time.”
Journalist Taylor Lorenz agreed with Fox’s connection of abuse and power, adding that Heard “didn’t have the power” in her relationship with Depp. She tweeted: “I think a lot of people don’t understand what abusive relationships look like. Julia Fox has expressed it very well.”
However, many people feel that the comment perpetuates the stigma that surrounds male survivors of domestic abuse. By claiming that Depp was more powerful in the relationship, social media users felt that he was downplaying their accusations of domestic violence.
“I just have to point out that his use of ‘physical force’ as proof that Johnny could not have been abused is a common stigma in abuse cases, but especially when it comes to male victims,” one person tweeted. “Domestic violence is NOT about size or strength, it is about control.”
Another person tweeted: “This is why men don’t speak up when they are mistreated. What a bad point of view.”
Julia Fox had already expressed her support for Amber Heard on social media, after the model posted another comment on Instagram stating that she is “so in love” with Heard and that the defamation lawsuit is a “sick way to follow controlling his life.
Fox, 32, is the mother of her one-year-old son, Valentino. In a recent interview with the new yorker, the Italian-American actress opened up about growing up in New York, where she started working as a dominatrix her senior year of high school. Before becoming the star of Uncut Gems As of 2019, Fox had published her own art books, detailing her experience with “abuse and addiction and sex work.”
“It felt good to remove this veil from my life,” he commented on his art at the time. “Of course it was bad, but it’s not the worst.”
The Independent Julia Fox was contacted for comment.
