Starbucks asks coffee shops to remove the term “frappuccino” from their menus

In recent days, various reports on social networks by small coffee shops around Mexico have indicated that the international coffee brand, Starbucks, is asking that The term “frappuccino” is removed from its menus, because it is a registered trademark exclusively for the American company.

The local coffee shops indicated that they received a letter from the law firm, Attorneys Intellectual Property Boutique, which supposedly represents the interest of Starbucks and ensures that the brand “frappuccino” is a term registered in the country by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), for exclusive use of Starbucks.

Aristegui News confirmed that in the collection of registered trademarks of the IMPIthe term “frappuccino” is registered as a trademark for exclusive use by Starbucks.

Also, according With the registration of the website of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Starbucks registered the brand “frappuccino” to market “coffee, tea, cocoa and espresso drinks, and coffee, tea, cocoa and/or espresso-based drinks, ready-to-drink coffee, [helados] shakes and frozen treats.”

The petition by the firm details that in 1994 Starbucks registered the “frappuccino” brand in the United States, while in 2002 the brand was registered in Mexico for beverages such as coffee and tea, so a license granted by the company is required to use the term for marketing.

On the other hand, Starbucks confirmed to the Milenio newspaper that the requests to local businesses are true and is asking coffee shops in Mexico to stop using the name “frappuccino” on their menus and advertising.


In addition, the company pointed out that the use of the term may cause confusion for consumers, but offers help to local coffee shops to find alternatives to name your drinks.

“At Starbucks we have made significant investments to develop our brand and intellectual property over the last 50 years. We own a substantial amount of intellectual property, including our frappuccino trademarkand other rights to the Starbucks name and trademarks.
