Produce Amazon, in association with Film 4 and StudioCanal, which is currently launching international sales at Cannes.
The film will shoot in Greenland and Iceland in September. Stone Mattress it is described as “a captivating revenge thriller set on a cruise ship in the Arctic.”
Julianne Moore stars as Verna, a 60-year-old twice-widowed retired physical therapist who embarks on a luxurious cruise ship through the magnificent and quiet Arctic Northwest Passage, populated by a throng of privileged influencers and wealthy retirees. On the ship, Verna meets the kind and charming Grace (Oh), and the seemingly ordinary Bob, a single man in his sixties who inherited a family business. Although he doesn’t have a fraction of Verna’s elegance and wit, Bob tries to seduce her. But he may not be the foolish but harmless man he initially appears to be, and his presence worries Verna. As the hurts and humiliations of her past resurface, the calm atmosphere of the cruise ship is disturbed by Verna’s silent but shocking act of revenge.
“I first read Margaret Atwood as a teenager and have been captivated by her work ever since. She is simply one of the most intelligent, prescient and engaging writers out there and Stone Mattress it’s another perfect illustration of that,” explains Ramsay. “I was immediately drawn to the way she frames the deeply buried trauma of a postmenopausal woman, an age group we very rarely hear about, through Verna’s dynamic and multifaceted character. From her wry humor to her moments of icy revenge to her delicate portrayal of an emotional repression specific to the boomer generation, it’s a story I’ve wanted to bring to life on screen from my first reading.”
