The 2022 Met Gala, held on Monday, May 2, was a tribute to American fashion and culture, according to the previously announced theme “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.”
Although most of the celebrities who did follow the dress code decided to pay homage to fashion icons like Marilyn Monroe or simply take elements of the golden age of Hollywood like glitter, feathers and the color gold, there were some celebrities who were inspired in American architecture and art.
Singer Billie Eilish wore a Gucci corset dress with a square neckline, designed with heavy inspiration from the 1885 painting “Portrait of Madame Paul Poirson.” Although the model was French, the painting was created by the American artist John Singer Sargent, so the outfit of the “bad guy” interpreter was a very wise choice when it came to paying homage to American culture. Billie also used a choker necklace and a flower on her chest, just like the ones used by the model in the famous painting.
Another celebrity who gave a twist to the theme of the Met Gala 2022 was Blake Lively, who according to herself declared, instead of thinking about the fashion of her country, she decided to pay homage to New York architecture.
