Roman Abramovichwho until today had served as owner of the English soccer club Chelsealeft the team after the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine under the orders of President Vladimir Putinwho is an ally of the former Russian governor who maintains business as a steel and metals magnate.

Through a statement on the social networks of the Chelsea club, Abramovich announced the change ahead of the League Cup Final to be played tomorrow against Liverpool. “During my almost 20 years as owner of Chelsea FC, I have always seen my role as custodian of the Club, whose job it is to ensure that we are as successful as possible well as building for the future, while playing a positive role in our communities.”

The businessman, who has dual Israeli citizenship and a net worth estimated at over $13 billioncontinued: “I have always made decisions with the best interest of the Club in mind. I remain committed to these values. That is why today I am giving the trustees of the Chelsea Charitable Foundation the administration and care of Chelsea FC. I think they are currently in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, the players, the coaching staff and the fans”.

The oligarch has been seen mired in controversy during the last few days as some media releases like The Times they assure that Abramovich could face a sanction from the British government after this week’s military operation, such as freezing his financial assets, which would directly imply a possible bankruptcy for Chelsea to which he lent £1.5 billion. This is one of the reasons that would be behind the surprise decision of the Russian billionaire.
