As a film star, Angelina Jolie is a matter of course for us, not least because the interest in her private life repeatedly overshadows her work. Before Jolie’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Eternals, the new action thriller They Want Me Dead therefore seems like a friendly but definite pat on the back: Angelina Jolie is a movie star, damn it, and so it’s bigger than any franchise.

Those Who Wish Me Dead – Trailer (English) HD
The ruthless duo hunts down the son, who has sensitive information that makes influential bodies sweat. With the survival expert at his side and a huge forest fire in front of your eyes a race for survival begins.
If Backdraft – Men Walking Through the Fire and The Mercury Puzzle had a child, it would look something like They Want Me Dead.
After the action thriller, one wishes for more appearances of the Eternals star
Without cheating: Can you call the last Maleficent-free live-action movie starring Angelina Jolie off the cuff? If your thumb is crawling across the phone display to secretly google, the answer is: It’s her 2015 directorial work By the Sea. While series and film franchises have boomed in the last decade, Angelina Jolie retired in 2010.
All the more welcome is a film like They Want Me Dead. It relies entirely on the sheer star power of the Oscar winner. Similar to the incredibly entertaining action film Salt (2010), she plays one of these roles in the novel adaptation, which of course would have gone to a man a few decades ago.
Instead of Harrison Ford (The Only Witness) or Bruce Willis (The Mercury Puzzle), Jolie becomes a protector with minimal backstory. She gives a traumatized professional and wants to make up for previous failures. That’s all we need to know about Hannah. That’s how much confidence the mere presence of Angelina Jolie inspires us, which in the fire brigade elevator looks at the same time credible and implausible, down-to-earth and weightless. A real star.
If you lack one at the end of They Want Me Dead, it’s not a sequel, prequel or spin-off, but more films with Angelina Jolie.
They Want Me Dead looks like a journey back in time to 90s cinema
Jolie’s tough yet warm, solitary yet buddy heroine is led by a Precisely cast ensemble supported. Jon Bernthal (Punisher) and Medina Senghore (Happy!) are on the side of the good guys as a defensive survival couple, while Game of Thrones villain Aidan “Littlefinger” Gillen and X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult hunt down the boy with unpleasant objectivity.

Little comes as a surprise in this film, but that’s part of the cozy cuddly blanket effect of the rather brutal They Want Me Dead. The routinely staged action thriller for adults would have been one among many in the 90s. Nowadays, this franchise- and superhero-free thrill is admired like a naturalist marvels at the last dodo in flames.
