Would Scream If you follow the slasher norms, Ghostface would very likely be in your mid-forties with a potbelly, wrinkles that are slowly becoming noticeable and the first gray hairs. But something clearly distinguishes this slasher icon from its established colleagues:
In contrast to Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, Ghostface was never tied to a single person, but always only a mask and costume. The killer, so much we know after four legendary cinema appearances, could basically be anyone.
And so in January 2021, exactly eleven years after the last film, you can eagerly participate againpuzzles and suspects when the masked knife swing prepares the next attack on Woodsboro and its inhabitants. But one thing has remained unchanged and predictable over the years:
Scream is finally done:
Scream remains true to itself
Wherever Ghostface shows up, the MPA and an R-Rating for its bloody antics are not far away! So it’s really not that surprising either Scream, as the new film will simply be called, comes to the cinema with this release. After all, you have a reputation to lose! And filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are determined to defend that.
The Ready or NotDirectors and their producer partner Chad Villella, who together form the filmmaker trio Radio Silence (V / H / S, Southbound) form, it was especially important that Scream– Raise the flag and honor the legacy of Wes Craven.
That is why, as they explain to Hello Sidney, it was imperative to focus on the legacy of the series. Not only wears Ghostface after the controversial change in the Scream-MTV series is back to its old mask, we are also looking forward to a reunion with the legendary Scream– Victims like Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her two fellow sufferers Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) before.
You also have to go new ways
And the new ones Scream-Directors know the secret of their long success:
“The previous parts have been very successful in building on each other and still being independent. That’s why it was clear to us that we too had to go this way – it was very important to us to write a love letter to our series, but also to Wes. At the same time, we wanted to take our own risks to give it a personal touch, ”says Gillett.
And that is evidently the renunciation of the in all Scream-Films established meta-horror. As mercilessly as Ghostface struck, there was always a slight wink that made it difficult to take Ghostface seriously as a killer. Finally was Scream even created by everyone rather as a slasher homage. This continuously expanded over time (for example through the Rod-Films within the film) Kniff is now apparently partly omitted.
A necessary step for Bettinelli-Olpin:
Film should build a bridge between old and new fans
“We had to put together a film that would work on its own and also entertain newcomers. Of course, it still has to feel like part of a brand that has been around for 25 years. So the main thing was to find a way to merge the two. It started with the script. “
“Hopefully the opener will pick up everyone, whether Scream-Newbie or longtime fan. You don’t need to have seen 27 films to understand ours. However, it will be a lot more fun to watch this scream if you are very familiar with the series. “
The trio promises to have lots of Easter eggs hidden in the fifth part. Because: “It wouldn’t be Scream, if there were no self-references or if the horror genre and pop culture were not discussed ”, so the final words.
And with the theatrical release approaching in January, the trailer premiere shouldn’t be far off either. Just in time for the 25th franchise anniversary, the motto is again: Save yourself if you can! Will Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Deputy Dewey be part of it again?
