Vin Diesel is one of the biggest action stars of our time and has been an integral part of the Hollywood firmament for 20 years. Today we mainly associate the muscle shirt-loving star with the Fast and Furious series, Riddick and Triple X.
Over the course of his career, however, the Fast and Furious 9 performer has often faced a casting crossroads, including two that would have resulted in a Marvel movie – and that long before his monosyllabic appearance as the little tree Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
After Fast and Furious success: Vin Diesel was in conversation for two dark Marvel heroes
Even two decades away, Vin Diesel’s rise in Hollywood is remarkable. In 1997 his directorial debut, Strays – Live Your Life, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and a year later he was already seen in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan.

Diesel then started the franchises that would dominate his career in quick succession: Pitch Black (2000), The Fast and the Furious (2001) and xXx – Triple X (2002). Hollywood had finally found a new action star to inherit the aging Stallones and Schwarzeneggers. So He was greeted by the role offers, especially those from Marvel.
The first Marvel roleThe offer to Vin Diesel was dark and complex on paper, but ultimately an embarrassing slip-up. He was offered the leading role in Daredevil (2003). Briefly introduce yourself to Vin Diesel as Matt Murdock, lawyer by day, vigilante by night. Add a little more Nickelback, Hoobastank and House of Pain on the imaginary sound track and you have the embarrassing result.
While Daredevil was not a financial failure, it remained a shadow over the career of Ben Affleck, who garnered a lot of criticism for his wooden performance. It’s hard to imagine that Vin Diesel of all people would have filled the poor dialogues with life. About his decision against Daredevil and for xXx, he said in 2009 (via MTV News ):
I make my own superhero films. […] It’s pretty fascinating. I think what happened is that the audience doesn’t have to put me in tights to get that superhero feel.
The second Marvel rolewho was associated with Vin Diesel was The Punisher. In 2004, the brutal avenger Frank Castle had his second cinema appearance after the 1989 published The Punisher with Dolph Lundgren. But in the end, Vin Diesel wasn’t in front of the camera to get revenge on John Travolta. In addition to Diesel, Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman was also considered for the role. Jackman refused and so Thomas Jane put on the skull shirt. Incidentally, he did a good job in a film that failed to realize the potential of the antihero.
In 2020 Vin Diesel shot his own Punisher blend after all
At Marvel, Vin Diesel landed as the spokesman for Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Another film showed that the role offers of the early 2000s weren’t that far removed from his personal taste.
In 2020 Vin Diesel played the antihero Bloodshot based on the Valiant Comics. This hero also experiences a personal tragedy that drives him on a brutal vengeance. Which, firstly, is similar to the Punisher. And second, sadly, a reminder of the popularity of fridging female characters in comics.
