Tokyo At the Olympic Games in Tokyo there are numerous lovers among the athletes, including in the German team. The “power couple” at this year’s edition, however, comes from the USA.
Joy shared is joy doubled, even with these mostly sterile corona games. Numerous lovers have made it to the Olympics together, including some from the German team, and they experience this greatest sporting event together. At least for a few days. Because Tokyo is currently no place to linger: Anyone who has finished their sport has to get out of Japan – and sometimes leave their partner behind.
- Florian Wellbrock and Sarah Köhler (swimming)
Well, the best-known lovers in German swimming were Britta Steffen and Paul Biedermann. But Florian Wellbrock and Sarah Köhler have also achieved considerable celebrities. In Tokyo they both won bronze in the pool, after which they parted ways for the first time: Köhler was finished and had to leave, for Wellbrock it is still about open water gold on Thursday. As a duo in the swimming pool, the two Magdeburgers do not want to present themselves anyway. “We are two individual athletes – and we want to be perceived as such,” said Köhler to the SID: “We are not out to hide, but we do not perform in pairs.”
- Lukas Märtens and Isabel Gose (swimming)
Lukas Märtens and Isabel Gose are not yet as successful as Köhler and Wellbrock. But the two 19-year-olds are considered to be the greatest talents in German swimming. After Gose’s move from Heidelberg to Magdeburg, it sparked – but because of the many training sessions before the Olympics, the couple, newly in love, didn’t have many opportunities to explore common interests outside the pool. For this one will “take time after the Olympics”, said Märtens, who is considered to be the crown prince of double world champion Florian Wellbrock.
- Megan Rapinoe (soccer) and Sue Bird (basketball)
The two US stars are the epitome of a “power couple” and as a household they have far more trophies to show than most couples drinking glasses. Both are not only immensely successful in sport, but also socio-politically active. Social justice, LGBTQ + rights, equality – Bird (40) and Rapinoe (36) want to be more than sports stars with showcases full of medals. The duo has been liiert since 2016, after the engagement last October, the marriage should follow soon.
- Nike Lorenz and Christopher Rühr (hockey)
Right at the opening ceremony, Christopher Rühr took a selfie with his girlfriend and sent it around the world via Instagram. “The greatest!” He wrote underneath, and he said: Nike Lorenz and the Olympic Games. The couple lives together in a hockey shared apartment, both play for Rot-Weiss Köln – and quite prominent roles at the Olympics. Lorenz led the women for the first time as the sole captain on the field, Rühr shone as a goalscorer against Canada (7: 1) and Great Britain (5: 1). On Monday, however, Lorenz’s trip ended, the “Danas” failed in the quarter-finals to Argentina (0: 3). Stir, however, can stay a while, because the men who also met the South Americans, gwannen 3: 1 and are in the semi-finals against Australia on Tuesday.
- Lisa and Florian Unruh (archery)
Separating the private and the sport is nothing for the Unruh couple. When Lisa and Florian tied the knot in September 2020 after years of relationship, the wedding was also all about shared passion: a line of sports arcs was waiting for the two in front of the registry office. Lisa, silver winner from Rio 2016, and Florian, European champion from 2014, now traveled together to the Olympic Games for the first time – but they were not allowed to start together. Lisa missed her place at her husband’s side in the mixed qualification. The Unruhs still brought a medal, the women won bronze in the team competition.
