Over the course of her three-decade career, Jennifer Aniston has sparked a veritable hype with her signature haircut, experimenting with different variants in all lengths and styles, and finally establishing a Californian-cool hair code that is coveted (and copied!).
The “Rachel” cut by Jennifer Aniston
It all started in the ’90s sitcom Friends, where the “Rachel” cut — a stepped, honey-colored bob — made her the hair icon she is today. This ’90s hairstyle was designed by none other than her longtime hairstylist Chris McMillan, who originally wanted to help Aniston grow out her bangs. For her 52nd birthday, the styling experts reveal the secret of the actress’s – now legendary – hairstyle.
Jennifer Aniston: from “brond” to blonde
For nearly 30 years, colorist Michael Canalé has stood by Anistton’s side to give her hair the classic “Rachel” look by coloring eye-catching strands into their honey-brown waves. “Jen is originally brunette,” says Canalé, who slowly took Aniston from her natural brown to a golden blonde before adding the bright strands. “You can see that I lightened her hairline step by step to accentuate her eyes and warm complexion,” he explains.
To create a similar look with your colorist, Canalé recommends a “Brond” before you go completely on blonde. The mixture of blond and brown goes particularly well with honey-colored hair and warm skin tones. Once you’ve reached a solid base, use a “color bath” (as Canalé calls it) to create dimension. To maintain the color and give the blonde tones a boost, a gloss treatment, such as Aniston’s preferred Canalé Midnight Blue Signature Gloss, is essential.
