5 Streaming Tips with Jennifer Lawrence

Thanks to the film series “The Hunger Games” and “X-Men”, Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. Her career goes back to a daring decision: At the age of only 14, she dropped out of school and moved to New York with her then 19-year-old brother to build a career in the film or model business. What sounds like a naïve idea actually worked in her case: After several engagements, the breakthrough followed in 2010 at the latest with “Winter’s Bone”.

We take a look at five films of her career that are particularly worth seeing, including the sci-fi drama “Passengers”, which will be shown on Vox on Thursday evening, April 12, at 8:15 p.m.

  1. “Winter’s Bone” (2010)

17-year-old Ree Doll (Jennifer Lawrence) lives with her mother in need of care in a run-down house in Missouri. Even that is to be taken away from them after the father Jessup, who was in prison for making Chrystal meth, used it as security for his bail. Because now there is no trace of Jessup. Ree then decides to take matters into his own hands and goes in search of him. In the process, however, she is targeted by dangerous drug lords.

Debra Granik’s intense drama earned Jennifer Lawrence her first Nomination for a Golden Globe as well as an Oscar. “Winter’s Bone” was also nominated for three other Academy Awards and convinced above all with its credible study of the rural lower class milieu of the USA.

“Winter’s Bone” is currently available as a subscription to Amazon Prime Video and from numerous providers as a rental and purchase option.

  1. “Silver Linings” (2012)

In the following years, Jennifer Lawrence went steeply uphill: In 2011 she appeared in “X-Men: First Decision” for the first time as Mystique in front of the camera, only a year later followed her parade role of Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games”. In the same year, the tragicomedy “Silver Linings” was released, which meant the next milestone for Jennifer Lawrence.

Pat (Bradley Cooper) has just been released from the psychiatric hospital and has moved back in with his parents (Jacki Weaver and Robert De Niro) after beating up his wife’s affair. When he meets the equally manic-depressive Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a complicated friendship develops between them, which leads to a pact: She tries to help him recapture his ex-wife if he becomes Tiffany’s dance partner in return.

Her convincing performance earned Jennifer Lawrence her first Oscar in the category “Best Actress”.

“Silver Linings” is currently available as a rental and purchase option from Amazon Prime Video and from numerous providers.

After that, the actress continued in a supporting role alongside numerous other Hollywood stars: Partly based on an actual FBI operation in the 1970s, David O. Russell directs an impressive drama about Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his accomplice Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). The tricksters make a deal with the police after being caught themselves: they are supposed to help FBI agent Richi DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) arrest corrupt politicians. Lawrence plays Rosenfeld’s extravagant wife Rosalyn, who literally likes to play with fire and is difficult to calculate anyway.

At the Oscars, the drama came up empty-handed despite being nominated ten times, but Jennifer Lawrence brought her performance to the next Golden Globe.

“American Hustle” is currently available as a subscription to Joyn+ and Netflix as well as from numerous providers as a rental and purchase option.

  1. Passengers” (2016)

In the 24th century, the Avalon heads for a colony in a distant solar system. All fellow passengers are in deep sleep, because the flight takes a whole 120 years. But Jim Preston (Pratt) is waking up far too soon, 90 years ago. of landing. Completely on his own, he decides to open journalist Aurora Lane’s (Jennifer Lawrence) sleeping capsule as well.

Morten Tyldum’s sci-fi proves to be a nuanced drama until the final third, before it drifts into a seemingly out of place action towards the end. Apart from that, “Passengers” deals with exciting questions of being human, for which only the look is worthwhile.

Our columnist Paula Irmschler, on the other hand, strongly advises against “passengers”. “Simply a normal film by romanticizing stalking, abuse, manipulation and self-abandonment. To cry,” she wrote in one of her columns and also explains why she sees it that way.

“Passengers” runs on 15.04. at 20.15 on Vox. In addition, it is available in the subscriptions of Sky and Netflix as well as with numerous providers as a purchase and rental option.

  1. Mother!(2017)

A year later, Jennifer Lawrence slipped into the lead role in Darren Aronofsky’s polarizing psycho-horror “Mother!”. The film about the woman without a name (Lawrence) and her husband (Javier Bardem), who live in a remote house and are haunted by uninvited guests, polarizes. While the critics praised him, there were repeated reports of cinema viewers leaving the hall en masse.

This may be mainly due to the nerve-wracking plot, whose ambiguity is not apparent at first glance. However, if you take a closer look at the biblically charged symbolism, you will be rewarded with a parable-like film experience that will remain in your memory for a long time. For Jennifer Lawrence, the Kammerspiel was probably one of the most intense performances of her career.

“Mother!” is available as a subscription from Netflix as well as from numerous providers as a purchase and rental option.
