The first pair of Yeezys Kanye West ever wore sold for a whopping $1.8 million in a private sale of sotheby’s auction house, CNN reports.
The shoes in question are the first prototype of the Nike Air Yeezy 1, which starts from an auction base of 1 million dollars, has therefore become the most expensive sneakers ever.
The Nike Air Yeezy 1 is valuable for two reasons: the first Yeezy model co-created by the rapper, but also the only model produced since it has never been marketed.
Designed by West and Mark Smith, the Air Yeezy 1 had a whole new silhouette – designed for a performer instead of an athlete – and then paved the way for Kanye’s brand, as we know it today, now under Adidas.
Tall, black, and seemingly simple-looking with a small swoosh, the Air Yeezy 1 was first revealed at the 2008 Grammy Awards, when Kanye wore them during the memorable performances of “Hey Mama” and “Stronger.” That was the first time the world had seen a couple of Yeezys.
Rares, an investment platform, won the pair of shoes. Rares CEO and co-founder Gerome Sapp said in a statement that owning these shoes is like owning “a piece of history,” the NY Post reports.
The tabloid also reports that Brahm Wachter, head of streetwear and modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, said in a statement that this sale ” says a lot about Kanye’s legacy as one of the most influential clothing and sneaker designers of our time. “
