It has just been announced that the fourth Captain America film is in the works and that Anthony Mackie will be the new Cap, after collecting the shield in the final episode of the first season of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
If you thought that the actor was informed about the film project, that it will involve him personally, and that he will presumably get his career off the ground, think again. Anthony had no idea about Marvel’s plans!
The 42-year-old revealed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that a cashier was reporting the big news to him while he was queuing at the supermarket:
“I literally found out in a grocery store,” she shared. “The cashier named Dwayne, a nice guy, said, ‘Hey, man. Is that true?!’, then he raised his cell phone. I said, ‘I don’t know anything!’
Anthony added, “That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you and say, ‘Come to L.A. we want to tell you what’s going on.’ So, I was excited to see what was going on, but I didn’t know anything.”
“What would have been really bad is if the filming of the movie [Captain America 4] had started and I had fallen off the pere. I don’t know what I expected, but that’s definitely not what I thought it would be,” he then joked.
However, Anthony already has very clear plans for the Sam Wilson version of the superhero and has referred to how he handled the Flag-Smashers in the series:
“It was mostly when he was talking to them and trying to communicate with them that what they were doing was right, but the way they were doing it was wrong,” Anthony explained. “Remember, he’s a counselor and he’s a normal guy who happened to become an Avengers. There are no superpowers, there is no super-costume, there is no super-serum. He’s just a boy. I love the idea of him moving in life as Captain America, as someone who brings peace and changes instead of destruction and physical strength.
