Almost three years ago it was announced that Steven Spielberg was working on a film adaptation of West Side Story. Last year came the news that the remake of the famous musical was officially in the works starring Rachel Zelger as Maria and Ansel Elgort as Tony.
Now the wait is over because the first trailer for West Side Story was presented during the 2021 Oscars ceremony.
In the trailer, we can take a first look at the songs and choreographies taken from the 1957 Broadway masterpiece. The clip also includes some notable Moments from West Side Story, including the ever-eventful school dance, blossoming loves, an intrepid romantic getaway, and feuds on the streets between the two rival teen gangs: the Sharks, made up of Puerto Rican immigrants, and the Jets, a gang of white guys.
The film, just like the original musical, is loosely based on Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare’s tragedy: a classic tale of fierce rivalry and young love in 1957 in New York.
The film will officially debut in theaters on December 10. The cast includes David Alvarez (Bernardo), Ariana DeBose (Anita), Mike Faist (Riff), Ana Isabelle (Rosalía), Brian d’Arcy James (Agent Krupke), Rita Moreno (Valentine), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chinese), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank).
There is also an appearance by Maddie Ziegler as a member of the Jets.
