Uncut Gems Signs the Best Box Office Debut for the A24

According to Variety reports, the expected thriller Uncut Gems has set a new box office record for the A24, an independent distribution company that has only brought films such as Midsommar, The Lighthouse and The Farewell to theaters this year.

Receiving $ 18.8 million on its opening weekend, in fact, the film starring Adam Sandler – whose performance also received compliments from Daniel Day-Lewis – surpassed the previous record of Ari Aster’s film ($ 11 million) to record the best performance of an A24 movie in five days.

Directed by brothers Josh and Benny Safdie (Heaven Knows What, Good Time), the film has now surpassed the $ 20 million box office in the United States despite a negative reception from the public – with a CinemaScore of C +, the film recorded the same appreciation of the discussed Cats.

The criticism, which had already praised him during his debut at the Telluride Film Festival, was completely different: out of a total of 213 reviews, Uncut Gems obtained a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%. The audience score instead stops at 54% in line with CinemaScore.

The global record for takings for the A24 is currently in the hands of Hereditary – The Roots of Evil, Ari Aster’s directorial debut, with $ 79 million-grossing worldwide. In second place we find instead the appreciated Lady Bird of Greta Gerwig with $ 78 million.
