As Mentioned: Universal Excludes Cats from the 2020 Oscar Race

Despite the Academy in the past few hours has allowed Cats to participate in the Oscars 2020 with its updated digital version post-release, it seems that it was precisely Universal that turned off all hope of a statuette for the Tom Hooper musical.

In a sudden and unexpected reversal, in fact, the major has removed the film from its web page of the For Your Consideration promotional campaign, which now includes only Noi, 1917, Queen & Slim, How To Train Your Dragon 3, Abominable and The Secret Life of Pets 2.

According to Variety sources, among other things, the film was also removed from all online streaming platforms reserved for members of the Academy, who consequently will not be able to view it (and therefore vote for it).

Already considered one of the most sensational commercial disasters in Hollywood history, the musical with Taylor Swift and Idris Elba cost well $ 100 million dollars and debuted at the box office with a gross of just $ 15.3 million worldwide in its first six days. That things were going to go wrong was already understood this summer, when the first official trailer was greeted by ridicule, memes, and gifs that went viral in making fun of the disturbing CGI that turned the actors into … cats.

The film even went incomplete in US theaters and was digitally retouched two days after its release.
