Ian McDiarmid “Completely Surprised” by Palpatine’s Return to Star Wars

Already in a recent interview, Ian McDiarmid had talked about the return of Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, focusing on the email received from JJ Abrams, but now, to the Digital Spy microphones, the actor has said to himself ” initially very surprised “about the return of his Darth Sidious.

Confusion arose because Palpatine’s return was in stark contrast to what George Lucas had suggested years earlier. McDiarmid explains: ” I thought he was dead. I thought he was really dead, finished. I say so because when we finished filming The Return of the Jedi, after being thrown into Galactic Hell, I asked George Lucas ‘but will he come back?’, And his answer was ‘no, he’s dead’. I just accepted that fact. At the time I obviously didn’t know that George would then do the prequels, so in a way, he wasn’t exactly dead, because we went back to show it when he was still a senator, plus young and healthy.
